PTE Academic- The Pearson Test of English Academic
Pearson- the PTE Academic conducting body prescribes the exam pattern of PTE Academic. The focus of the PTE Academic exam pattern is for aspirants who plan to study abroad but hail from countries where English is not a native language.
PTE Academic is a computer-based academic English language proficiency test aimed at non-native English speakers wanting to study abroad specifically in Australia and New Zealand. The test is just like IELTS but unlike IELTS, PTE is done on a computer and scored by a computer. PTE Academic test measures candidates on four language skill sets namely Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening.
According to PTE Academic test pattern, the Writing and Speaking modules are integrated into one; Reading and Listening modules are designed separately.
Questions often test two skills together, such as listening and writing or reading and speaking. The whole test is done in a single session, lasting 3 hours and is taken sitting at a computer. Candidates need to use a computer and a headset to listen, respond and read the questions. The PTE Academic exam is held at various recognized PTE Test Centres.

PTE Academic Test Sections
The test comprises four sections- Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening andhas three main parts. Part 1 consists of Speaking and Writing, Part 2 has Reading and Part 3 is Listening. The very first part of Speaking also includes a Personal Introduction where the candidate has to introduce himself within 30 seconds.
However, this item is not scored, but the candidate gets a chance to introduce himself to the institute. The test taker can have an optional break of 10 minutes during the test after the Reading Section.
Pte Academic Score
PTE Academic Test has a score scale ranging from 10 to 90. The test is scored against the Global Scale of English, a thermometer-style scale that gives test taker an accurate overview of his skills. The PTE Academic Score Report includes test taker’s overall score, communicative skills scores and enabling skills scores.
The overall score reflects test taker’s overall English language ability. The score is based on performance on all items in the test. The range for the overall score is 10-90 points. Scores for communicative skills like listening, reading, speaking and writing are based on all test items that assess these skills, either as a single skill or together with other skills. The range for each communicative skill score is 10-90 points.
Scores for enabling skills like grammar, oral fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary and written discourse are based on all test items assessing one or more of these skills. The range for each enabling skill score is 10-90 points. The display of the scores in a graph allows test taker to quickly identify his strengths and weaknesses, and how each skill relates to his overall performance.
A score of 10 means a level of English that is not sufficient for communication purposes. A score of above 85 on the other hand indicates an extremely high level of English.
